Gold is a symbol of wealth, and prestige, highly prized, and only available usually to the rich and famous. It is a soft, inert metal, with a bright shiny color.  It is used to signify great success in sports eg a Gold Medal in the Olympics is the highest award. It is also a commodity which holds its value due to its rarity. Hence it is kept by the world's Central Banks as a reserve.
